In the Development Strategy of BTC for the period until 2020, we have committed to the guidelines of environmental and social responsibility. We have been actively focusing on sustainable development for more than 15 years and EUR 52.5 million has been earmarked for environmentally and socially responsible projects.
In 2017, we carried out 21 projects in the field of energy efficiency. We produce energy from renewable sources, we plan more efficient consumption and upgrade equipment. In 2017, in cooperation with the Jožef Stefan Institute, we conducted an energy review of the BTC City Ljubljana area. The results serve as a basis for new investments in energy efficiency and renewables. We are proud to be a partner in the Slovenian-Japanese four-year NEDO smart grid project (in cooperation with ELES) which is supposed to enable better coordination between stakeholders in the electricity system and more efficient operation of the latter.
In 2017, we reduced carbon dioxide emissions by as much as 5.449.637 kg. In addition, in the last five years we recorded on average only 5.9% of water losses annually, due to regular monitoring of losses and modernization of the water supply network. In line with the concept of a circular economy, we strive every year to collect several secondary raw materials and reduce the amount of mixed municipal waste. In 2017, together with business partners, we managed to separate as much as 67% of secondary raw materials at the very source.
Under the umbrella of the Mission: Green business unit, established in 2014, we create green opportunities and promote innovation, while striving for an open, environmentally conscious society. We take on an active role in improving energy efficiency, saving water, treating waste responsibly, looking for solutions to sustainable mobility, taking care of safety, supporting wider social initiatives and developing innovative ideas and solutions.
We are well aware of the changes in the area of sustainable mobility. In 2017, we have enabled 12 new charging points for electric vehicles in six different locations in BTC City, together with our business partner, Petrol. We have also established a system for the sharing with partner, at 4 stops in BTC City Ljubljana and at 1 stop in BTC City Murska Sobota. We are constantly looking for new business models and breakthrough concepts. At the BTC City area, we activated a richly diversified system of street, telecommunication, energy and innovative infrastructure which forms the basis of the evolving living test environment of BTC City Living Lab.
